Description
As a scene of Snow White unfolds on the stage of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, nine puppeteers are behind the precise movements of the princess and the seven dwarfs. The 110-year-old theatre in Salzburg in western Austria is among those still dedicated to puppetry with its performance practice recognised by Unesco. In addition to giving life to the characters on stage, each puppeteer has their own specialty in the manufacturing process. The cross -- played with one hand and smaller than those many other theatres use -- "allows a diversity of movements," explains puppeteer and costume designer Edouard Funck.
