Description
A large military and civilian parade takes place in Cameroon's capital Yaoundé, to celebrate the 51st National Unity Day, which commemorates the end of federalism and the proclamation of the unitary state of Cameroon. This day is meant "to remind us that we are all one nation, one people, that together we can build and develop, together we can be happy, together we can live in peace", says Therese Temgoua.
However, this national unity celebration is now being challenged by the secessionist tendencies in the English-speaking parts of Cameroon and the calls for tribal hatred that are multiplying throughout the country. Pierre Youte, a journalist, believes that "today Cameroonians agree that we are living a certain facade unity (...) because there are secessionists who do not let us breathe (...) we see the rise of hatred in the country, the division is there".
