Many Gazans were hostile to Hamas ahead of the group's brutal October 7 attack on Israel, researchers behind the Arab Barometer found. "This is especially important because of the argument that all of Gaza supports Hamas and therefore all of Gaza should be held accountable for the actions, atrocious actions of Hamas," says Amaney Jamal, dean of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and a co-founder and co-principal investigator for Arab Barometer. Jamal, who was born in the US and lived as a teenager near Ramallah, also found in her research that Gazans blame Hamas' corruption more than the Israeli blockade for their economic woes and are open to a two-state solution.
