Description
Following in the footsteps of her family's past five generations, Jozsefne Szedlak, or as everyone calls her, Auntie Ilonka, leaves her home for the nearby bell tower at least twice a day. As one of the few remaining bell ringers in Hungary, it is her duty to toll the bells at the Catholic church in Tereny, a village north of Budapest. For Christmas, she manually chimes all three bells of the medieval church. "The bell calls out the living, mourns the dead and breaks the storms," she says. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
