A decision by Senegal's Constitutional Council to reject the candidacy of Ousmane Sonko to run in next month's presidential vote is met with dismay by supporters of the jailed opposition leader on the streets of the capital Dakar. "It's not an election, it's a selection, because he's the leader of the opposition and the most popular candidate in Senegal," says one such supporter, Oumar Alioune Kane. Sonko, who came third in the 2019 presidential election, has been at the centre of a bitter stand-off with the state that has lasted more than two years and sparked often deadly unrest.
