Description
With its windows smashed and walls covered in graffiti, the 2004 Athens Olympic beach volleyball centre is emblematic of Greece's failure to build on the legacy of the Games. 20 years on, several multi-million euro stadiums and facilities have been demolished and the Olympic Stadium was, in September, shut down over failed safety tests. "There was no plan on what to do with the sport facilities" says Spyros Capralos, head of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, who adds that this "led to some of the facilities not being utilised...and not being serviced". In learning from Athens, Capralos says, future Olympic hosts should "not try to build permanent facilities that would have no use afterwards." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
