Description
The world is experiencing its second major coral bleaching event in 10 years following months of record-breaking ocean heat, a US agency announced Monday. Australia's Great Barrier Reef is suffering its seventh mass bleaching event since 1998 - and scientists fear it may not be able to recover. Anne Hoggett is the Director of the Australian Museum's Lizard Island Research Station and has lived on the reef for over 30 years, studying its changes amid increased heat stress. "The only time we've seen bleaching this bad was in 2016," Hoggett says. "When just about everything died." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
