Femicide and domestic violence against women in North Africa are increasingly reported online and by the media but rights groups say legal measures to protect the victims remain scant. Farida, a 45-year-old Algerian using a pseudonym for fear of retribution from her ex-husband, explains how she nearly died when he attempted to choke her with a rope. "We know, at least for those we've been able to identify, that there have been 25 (femicide cases) last year," says Karima Brini, head of the Tunisian Women and Citizenship group.
