Description
Concealed by scaffolding since February, the restoration of the gilded Baldachin in St. Peter's Basilica is nearing completion, with the 30-metre-tall centrepiece's reinvigorated features being unveiled during a press tour. The Baroque canopy is a masterpiece by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and last underwent work in 1758. "We have uncovered all the gilding that was hardly visible before," explains Carlo Usai, one of those working on the structure, "allowing us to appreciate the details". The current works are expected to finish on November 30, ahead of the Catholic Jubilee year of 2025. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
