Images of the Ver-o-Peso wholesale fish market and acai fruit market in Belem in the Para State of Brazil. The Ver-o-Peso market is considered one of the oldest public markets in the country and was elected one of the wonders of the state of Para and one of the the Seven Wonders of Brazil. The tax collector's office was located on-site during the colonial era and called the "Casa do Haver-o-peso" ("Have-the-Weight House"). It was here that taxes for goods brought from the country's Amazon forest, rivers and countryside were officially paid to the Portuguese Crown, after their weight was measured, hence the name.
