Description
A Venezuelan nun in the chapel of a school founded by Carmen Rendiles shares her reaction after Pope Francis approved Rendiles' canonization. Rendiles is the first Venezuelan to become a saint. "When I entered the convent, she was the one who received me, a very humble person, very devoted to the heart of Jesus, very dutiful with her duties," says Mother Maria Concepcion Gomez, head of Sister Carmen Rendiles' congregation.
Born in Caracas in 1903 without a left arm, Rendiles (1903-1977) completed part of her religious formation in France. She was known for her service to the neediest in parishes and schools. In 1965, she founded the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus, which continues to do social work in Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
