Description
On daily patrol missions, the Finnish Coast Guard is closely monitoring the Russian "shadow fleet" -- old and technically deficient oil tankers used to skirt restrictions on Russian oil exports. The "shadow fleet" has significantly increased the risk of an oil spill incident in the Baltic Sea, says Deputy commander of Finland's Coast Guard Ilja Iljin. "These ships are most likely not in the best condition so that increases the risk," Iljin tells AFP, referencing the "Eagle S" tanker, suspected of intentionally damaging subsea cables in the Gulf of Finland on Christmas Day.
