March 25 on The Story: At last estimate, Multnomah County faces a $70 million budget deficit for homeless services alone. That has service providers across the county living in fear of deep cuts. Among them is the nonprofit Stone Soup, a kitchen in Portland which receives county funding for food deliveries to people in need. Each week, they make hundreds of meals — today it's for a children's hospital. But with the county looking at cuts of up to 25%, the heads of this program fear they're next on the chopping block.
