Nov. 22 on The Story: Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed a ban on the use of formaldehyde in hair-straightening products. The proposal was prompted by a decades-long study released two years ago that linked the use of this highly toxic chemical to hormonal cancers. But the agency has repeatedly missed its own benchmarks for moving forward, and it's unclear when — or if — it's going to happen. That particularly matters for Black women and other women of color, many of whom were raised using these chemical hair-straightening treatments, and are likely to be most impacted by toxic products. One woman from Oregon has already sued several beauty companies, alleging that she developed uterine cancer as a result of these products.
