At Ora Bolmeier Park in Vernonia, Ore., Michael Calhoun applied to receive a new green tree that has a war-colored past.
"Everyone loses when it comes to nuclear arms," Calhoun said.
The tree is from Hiroshima, Japan. When the atomic bomb was dropped 77 years ago during World War II, many trees survived the blast. It gave hope to the people. Hideko Tamura was 10 years old at the time.
"I was injured and pinned under the wreckage," she recalled.
Now serving as a Peace Ambassador for Hiroshima, she’s spearheaded the distribution of the Peace Trees throughout Oregon.
"How do we heal together?" Tamura said. "Whilst ... collective healing."
Michael loves his hometown and it’s trees.
"The story of this tree was universal in it's story of resiliency,” he said.
