Wednesday, Governor Jeff Landry signed a stack of bills into law that he says will lower car and property insurance rates for Louisianians.
“Insurance profits continue to go up while the money in peoples' pockets continues to go down,” he said at the signing ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion.
Landry called the set of bills the “largest tort reform in our state’s history.” Most of the 6 measures he signed focus on car insurance.
“Let me be clear, I believe both trial lawyers and insurance companies are responsible. They are to blame for the pain our families feel in their pocket each and every month,” he said.
One measure will enact “modified comparative fault,” which prevents a plaintiff from collecting damages if they are found to have been at least 51% at fault for a wreck. Another prevents undocumented immigrants from collecting general damages if they are injured in a wreck.
