Description
December 2, 1983 San Diego developer Dan Pearson set up a mockup of 1887 hotel interiors in a downtown warehouse to attract investors in his plan to resurrect and restore two historic hotels--The Horton Grand and the Brooklyn Kahle Saddlery. Plans were in the works to revitalize the Gaslamp Quarter and this was part of it. Both hotels were in the process of being dismantled and rebuilt. Both hotels were scheduled for demolition in the 1970s when the City of San Diego purchased them to build the Horton Plaza shopping center on the site. The hotels were dismantled brick by brick, with each brick numbered, catalogued, and stored. In 1986, the hotels were rebuilt into an entirely new hotel at the present location at Fourth Avenue and Island Avenue--the Horton Grand Hotel. Bridget Asaro reports.
