At Tunisia's first salon specialising in natural hair, 22-year-old Kenza Laabidi proudly admires her curls in the mirror after a hairdresser applies a moisturising product to her hair. Harmful hair treatments are commonplace for styling textured hair – a term used to describe wavy, curly, or frizzy hair – which has long been excluded from conventional beauty standards in the North African country. In recent years, an increasing number of specialised salons in the Tunisian capital, and the wider availability of dedicated hair products is uprooting traditional standards, and giving new life to the beauty of natural hair.
