Description
An officer-involved shooting was under investigation in Clay County Tuesday evening.
An Indiana State Police spokesperson said the incident began around 5:50 p.m. April 15 when an off-duty town marshal reported finding a U-Haul truck he believed may have been reported stolen.
Troopers and Clay County Sheriff's Department deputies found the truck at a gas station around State Road 59 and State Road 42 and tried to stop it. The spokesperson said the driver of the truck disregarded the officers and went west on State Road 42 for a short distance, then turned onto a private drive and stopped. A female occupant then ran from the truck and the driver continued going south on the private drive, doing so before officers could get a tire-deflating device in place.
According to the spokesperson, the truck stopped a second time and officers began negotiating with the driver. When police tried again to deploy a tire-deflation tool, the driver put the truck in reverse, striking three sheriff's cars and nearly hitting a deputy.
