Sept. 8 on The Story: Late last week, Representative Cyrus Javadi dropped a bombshell. The state lawmaker from Tillamook, who has represented much of Oregon's north coast since first winning election in 2022, announced that he was leaving the Republican Party and running his next campaign as a Democrat. The signs were there — Javadi was the only Republican to break ranks and get a key transportation funding bill through the House during the recent special session, and he previously sided with Democrats on a bill meant to curtail library book bans. According to Javadi, it's not him who changed — it's today's Republican Party, starting at the national level.
