Former French intelligence chief in court Bernard Squarcini who was head of the DCRI French domestic intelligence service under former president Nicolas Sarkozy went on trial Tuesday in Paris on charges of collecting personal data for a fradulent, disloyal or illicit use. In 2010, Squarcini requested phone records of Gerard Davet, a reporter at Le Monde newspaper in order to identify his sources for an article implicating then labour minister Eric Woerth in a scandal involving L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt. If found guilty, Squarcini could be sentence to up to five year in prison and fined up to 300,000 euros. Images and soundbites.
