Description
Europe's oldest lake, Lake Ohrid, named after a small Macedonian town, is threatened by uncontrolled urbanisation and tourism. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for four decades for its unique biodiversity and architectural and cultural heritage, the area risks being placed on a list of sites in danger in July.
In an attempt to preserve the site's classification, local authorities have dismantled a dozen bars and restaurants on the shores of the lake, which was formed more than two million years ago. SOUNDBITES
