Description
The coast of Peru was hit by an oil spill caused by strong tides following a volcanic eruption in Tonga. People on boats worked on collecting oil still floating in the water, while workers and volunteers in protective gear began cleaning oil that had washed ashore. President Pedro Castillo, who visited a site of a spill near Lima, signed a decree declaring 'the climate emergency' an issue of national interest. Fearing for their livelihoods, fishermen in Ventanilla, a district to the north of Lima, protested outside the gates of the Pampilla Refinery, demanding compensation.
