Description
Greece commemorates the centenary of what they call the 'Catastrophe of Smyrna' (now Izmir in Turkey), a painful event that remains anchored in the Greek collective memory. The 'Burning of Smyrna' marked the end of the Greek occupation and the Greco-Turkish wars after Turkish forces entered the city in the Aegean coast in 1922, driving out Greek and Armenian residents.
