Description
Catholic worshippers in Nicaragua celebrate the Way of the Cross on Good Friday in churchyards rather than in the streets, amid tensions between the government of President Daniel Ortega and the Church. Opposition media and some priests claimed that the government had banned the traditional Holy Week processions in the streets, although no official restrictions were reported. Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, who led the Way of the Cross in Managua Cathedral, says that people "participated massively." According to local legislation, the police must authorise all public activities, including religious ones. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
