Santos Tuz speaks to his followers in Maya and Spanish on social media, where the 21-year-old Mexican teaches hundreds of thousands of people his indigenous language. He started the online lessons during the pandemic. "I realised that many young people stopped speaking the Maya language, however, they do speak it, but within their homes. Why? Because they are afraid of being discriminated against," says Santos.
Some 7.3 million Mexicans, 6.1% of the population, speak an indigenous language, according to official data. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
