This scene was unthinkable a few months ago in El Salvador, but the "war" against gangs waged by President Nayib Bukele since March 2022 has created an environment of security that has led people to gather in public spaces. Bukele's tactics have come under fire from rights groups including Human Rights Watch and the UN Human Rights Office, which say suspension of constitutional rights has opened the door to widespread abuses.
