Description
Affoussata Sidibé can finally take her infant daughter home after spending a month with her in the kangaroo mother unit of the Treicville University Hospital Center, in Abidjan. "She was small. She was born 800 grams. Today she is 2 kilos and some. So, I’m happy, very, very happy. I’m going home," says Sidibé. Recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), this "skin-to-skin method" has had a high success rate. According to UNICEF, between January 2019 and October 2022, out of 2,391 premature and low-weight newborns treated in the country’s "kangaroo-mother units", 2,274 survived thanks to this method.
