Description
Bulgaria unveils a 111-metre (364-foot) flagpole on the Rozhen meadows high up in the southern Rhodope mountains. Organisers say that this is the tallest flagpole in an EU country so far and also the flagpole that is raised at the highest altitude in the world -- 1,430 metres above sea level. "This cause won't make Bulgarians richer but it will certainly raise the spirits of a large part of the people," says Simeon Karakolev, manager of the Heritage in the Future foundation. The costly project was built with money from a donations campaign under the patronage of Bulgarian President Rumen Radev. But it also sparked mockery on social media and was met with opposition from environmentalists. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
