Description
"If I had any hope of making a living from fishing, I would never attempt the journey by pirogue", says Ababacar Diop, a young fisherman who tried to reach Spain but was intercepted by the Senegalese navy. Although small-scale fishing has long been a mainstay of Senegal’s coastal communities, overfishing and climate change are leaving fishermen empty-handed. Nowadays, when they climb into their small boats, these fishermen are often leaving their lives behind in hope of a better one in Europe. “Here, almost everyone has left, and there are no young people left,” says Ababacar.
