STOCKSHOTS of the Cayuni River, deforestation caused by mining activities, and a Mango Landing village in the Essequibo region, disputed by Guyana and Venezuela.
Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has revived a decades-old claim on the oil-rich Essequibo territory, which makes up more than two-thirds of Guyana's territory, mounting international warnings against an escalation of the row. In a controversial referendum on December 3, 95% of voters allegedly supported Venezuela being declared the rightful owner of Essequibo. The land dispute is before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. However, Venezuela does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICJ in the territorial dispute. STOCKSHOTS
