Description
Tourists pack a three-storey sightseeing boat for a cruise past Taiwan's Kinmen Island, just several kilometres from China's southeastern island of Xiamen. China claims Taiwan, which holds elections on Saturday, as part of its territory and has vowed to seize it one day. "Although Taiwan is apart over there, they're still Chinese people, our brothers and sisters" says Huang Ling, a tourist from Hubei province. "They're an inalienable part of our Chinese nation" he adds. Chinese President Xi Jinping has described reunification between China and Taiwan as inevitable and his government this week that electoral victory for Lai Chang-te, the island's independence-leaning candidate and frontrunner, poses a "severe danger" to Taiwan's future.
