Gisela Gaytan, the ruling Morena party's mayoral candidate in Celaya, was killed as she was heading to a rally in the city, while three people were injured. From June 4, 2023 to March 26, 2024, 50 people have been killed in "episodes of electoral violence", 26 of them aspired to an elected office, said the consulting firm Laboratorio Electoral in its latest report. Gaytan is the latest politician to be murdered in Mexico in the run-up to the presidential elections on June 2, in which 20,000 local and federal positions and the entire Congress will be voted on.
