Customs officers at Bulgaria's main Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint with Turkey seize rubber boats and outboard motors they believe are being used by smugglers to traffic undocumented migrants across the English channel into the UK. Bulgaria strengthened its cooperation with Britain to crack down on the import of small boats in late 2022 and since then, amendments have been made to the country's legislation to allow it to seize equipment at the checkpoint. "Through these measures, we have seized over 50 boats, 50 outboard motors for these boats, as well as numerous pumps, life jackets and equipment for these boats," says Georgi Gospodinov, head of Kapitan Andreevo customs checkpoint.
