Some three thousand surfing fans gathered at the new fishing pier in Ocean Beach this afternoon for
the conclusion of the World's first surfing championships. Australian Nat Young, walked away with the first place trophy and the title of "the world's greatest surfer." He finished the competition with a total of 293 points. In the women's competition, Joyce Hoffman of the West Coast U.S. team won the distaff side with a final score of 86 points. Joey Hamasaki, also of the West Coast team was second while 14-year old Mimi Munro of the East Coast was third.
Jock Sutherland of Hawaii finished second in the men’s division. Corky Carroll of the West Coast team placed third and Steve Bigler of Encinitas rallied for fourth place.
