Description
Thousands of transport workers halt their operations in Lima, in a protest against extortion and the murder of three drivers in recent weeks by organised crime. "Extortion has become urban terrorism now and needs to be declared an emergency," says Martin Valeriano, president of the National Association for the Integration of Transport Workers (Anitra).
At least 3,000 vehicles stopped providing service for 24 hours in large parts of the Peruvian capital of 10 million inhabitants, as well as in Callao, according to union estimates. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
