Since the long-delayed ban on single-use plastic bags, in October 2024, to help tackle environmental pollution, Somalia is struggling to rid itself of their usage, especially with eco-friendly bags priced much higher-- 4,000 Somali shillings ($0.17) compared with 1,000 shillings ($0.04). “We need cost-effective alternatives to these bags,” says market vendor Zeynab Yasir.
