Description
Growing up in a Kenya slum, Annastacia Mwende Muli always loved cars but never thought of becoming a mechanic. Now, she has gone from being a star pupil to a full-time job at a back-street Nairobi garage. These kinds of practical and artisanal skills are what's needed say experts like Jeffrey Okoro, the executive director of CFK Africa, a nonprofit working with youths in the slums. "There is a disconnect between our education system and the current job realities in the country," he says. "In reality, in Kenya, what is employing folks is the 'Jua Kali' sector or artisans."
