Description
In the East Nile district of Sudan's war-ravaged capital Khartoum, Red Crescent workers clad in white protective suits pull bodies from a sewage pit and record them carefully. "I've witnessed rapes, I've witnessed people being tortured, I've seen everything from my house," says a woman living close to the pit where 15 bodies were recovered. Since April 2023, a war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has left large swathes of the capital unrecognisable, and well over 3.5 million of its people have fled, according to the United Nations.
