Donald Trump, somber and bandaged, is accepting his party’s presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention.
His speech is largely ignoring his most divisive plans and focusing instead on uniting his party — and the nation — just five days after an assassination attempt that could have ended his life.
The 78-year-old former president, known best for his bombast and aggressive rhetoric, is instead offering a softer and deeply personal message. He says: “I’m not supposed to be here tonight. There was blood pouring everywhere, yet, in a certain way I felt very safe because I had God on my side.”
