With the traditional mixing-of-the-waters of several-nations the ceremonial-start of weekend competition in the World Surfing Championships got underway this morning at Ocean Beach. Participating in the ceremony were the acknowledged "father of the surfing sport" ---Duke-the-daddy Kahanamoku-along with pretty Katie McCowan and Councilman Allen Hitch. The surf was mild again today---but in what action there was -2 men and 2 gals were selected for tomorrow's finals--joining 8 surfers who gained-the-finals Thursday and Friday. Bernard Farley of Australia and Rodney Sumpter of England advanced to the Men's finals and Phyllis O'Donnell and Josette Lagardere made it in the Women's division.

Some three thousand surfing fans gathered at the new fishing pier in Ocean Beach this afternoon for
the conclusion of the World's first surfing championships. Australian Nat Young, walked away with the first place trophy and the title of "the world's greatest surfer." He finished the competition with a total of 293 points. In the women's competition, Joyce Hoffman of the West Coast U.S. team won the distaff side with a final score of 86 points. Joey Hamasaki, also of the West Coast team was second while 14-year old Mimi Munro of the East Coast was third.
Jock Sutherland of Hawaii finished second in the men’s division. Corky Carroll of the West Coast team placed third and Steve Bigler of Encinitas rallied for fourth place.
