Description
California lawmakers are pushing for stricter plastic bag laws.
Lawmakers introduced a new bill earlier this week in Sacramento that would ban stores from offering customers any sort of plastic bags at checkout. They say they want to make the plastic bags illegal because of what they say are loopholes in the current statewide ban on single-use plastic bags.
Senator Catherine Blakespear from Encinitas is one of the lawmakers that introduced the new legislation.
“I think we should ban them, I think we need to protect mother earth. And isn’t that the reason why we banned the plastic to begin with? Because it’s not good for the landfills," said Terry Laforce, who approves of the proposed legislation.
The state legislature passed a statewide ban on single use plastic bags in 2014, but lawmakers say the ban is no longer working as intended.
