Description
A previously outlawed technology could make an appearance along Interstate 8 in the coming future.
“Well you know we're moving in that way, the future is coming so I'm excited,” La Mesa Resident Ramon Gonzales said.
At the start of 2023, a commercial digital billboard company made a proposal to the city to display large billboards along the northern side of I-8.
“These are very large freeway billboards, they will be seen from quite a distance,” La Mesa Councilmember, Jack Shu said.
This effort was initially rejected but it was brought back to the table to give the idea a second try. This time around resulted in a four to one vote, the single vote opposing the digital billboards was by Councilmember Shu.
“It should be noted that the City of La Mesa has an ordinance against digital billboards,” Shu said.
If the plan goes further, the ordinance will have to be changed. In September, City Council directed staff to develop and circulate a request for proposal for the placements and installations of digital billboards in the city.
