February 20, 1998 A shocking end to a high-speed chase…and you watched it live as it happened from Chopper 8. A driver speeds through an Oceanside intersection…and plows into three vehicles. Reporter Jason Austell was stunned and clearly in distress as he screamed "oh no!" Two drivers walked away but 61-year-old Joe McCarley was airlifted to the hospital. Thankfully he survived and was listed in good condition on February 21st. On May 2, 2000, a judge sentenced the driver, 48-year-old Donald Mayfield eight years’ probation. He plead guilty. He suffered permanent brain damage and was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
