Meanwhile in Oceanside a war protest sponsored generally by the Movement for a Democratic Military drew a crowd estimated by authorities as 3500, and by demonstration supporters as 10-12 thousand. The protesters came from throughout the Southern California area, and they marched to Beach Stadium for a rally, though they did not follow their original parade plans. An Oceanside ordinance regarding parade permits had been upheld by a court, and as a result, the MDM plans had been altered. Although there were some unsympathetic bystanders, there was no violence. At the stadium, the rally featured music and speeches aimed at protesting America’s role in the Vietnam War, but there was no violence. Police lined up along the beach to keep the crowd in the stadium and from dispersing along the beach.
