March 19, 1972 The new six mile stretch of Interstate 805 opened on March 20, 1972—so on March 19, bicycle riders had the opportunity to test it out. What an awesome opportunity it would be—unfortunately more showed up than expected, and things got a little out of hand. As Gene Gleeson reported, the situation created “wheel pandemonium.”
