Description
A Seattle nonprofit’s Day of Remembrance event, honoring the history of Japanese Americans and drawing parallels to the Trump administration’s treatment of immigrants, was canceled by Pike Place Market just a week before the event.
The Market said the event’s messaging did not align with its values, but organizers from the nonprofit say standing up to injustice is a vital part of remembrance.
Tsuru for Solidarity planned to host a Day of Remembrance and Resistance event at Pike Place Market on Feb. 19, with the theme of “Stop Repeating History.” In a social media post, the nonprofit said it would be holding a press conference to connect Japanese American history with President Donald Trump’s “mass deportation strategy.”
Pike Place Market’s decision to not support or sponsor the event left the nonprofit “deeply disappointed,” according to the post by Tsuru for Solidarity.
