Members of the clergy would be required, by state law, to report potential cases of child abuse to authorities, under a proposal at the Washington state legislature.
Currently those in professions like teaching, childcare, and law enforcement are considered “mandatory” reporters. They face misdemeanor charges if they don’t report potential cases of child abuse or neglect.
House Bill 1211, which adds clergy to the list, passed out of the House Early Learning & Human Services committee Friday morning.
“It is critical that we find ways to continue to protect children,” said Rep. Jamila Taylor, (D-Federal Way), the bill’s sponsor.
