Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says his government will "respond to any attempt to impose protectionism, that no longer has a place in today's world" in response to the import tariffs imposed by US counterpart Donald Trump.
Speaking at an event in the country's capital Brasilia, Lula adds Brazil's course of action will be made "with reference to the Economic Reciprocity Law," approved unanimously by the Brazilian Congress to counter barriers to trade.
Trump announced a 10 percent tariff on general imports from Latin America's biggest economy, among a raft of levies on trading partners around the world. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
