January 2, 1963 It's rare but sometimes a script is missing. In this case, it is, so hopefully Windansea Surf Club will know what happened in Hawaii. A man is holding a key to the city of Honolulu from the mayor Neal Blaisdell. Our local surfers must have made quite an impression. They were welcomed by excited fans--probably at Lindbergh Field. Hopefully we can solve this history mystery.
Legendary big wave surfer Butch Van Artsdalen is in the thumbnail photo on the right.
Mystery solved--thank you Tom Tweed.
The WindanSea Surf Club flew to Hawaii to compete in the Makaha International Surfing Championships, which was at the time the unofficial World Championship of surfing. Joey Cabell won the Men's comp and Nancy Nelson won the Women's. Mike Doyle won the Tandem division with Linda Merrill. The club was presented the key to the city by the mayor of Honolulu. That's Thor Svenson holding the key with Linda Benson to the left and Butch on the right at the end. Chuck Hasley was president of the club back then and his son still has that key.
